Doug, Team Leader
(joined GCS, Sept 2004)
After leaving school I went to Berkshire College of Art and Design to study Graphics but soon found out that I wasn't as good at Art as I initially thought I was. I knew, after seeing other students' work, that I would struggle to make a career in the industry. Even though I loved drawing and wanted to complete the course, I had to make a quick decision as to where my life was heading. When I finished the 2-year course I worked in a in a few jobs, but none gave me any real direction in life.
Before joining GCS I worked for an American electronics company, starting at the very bottom, picking and packing microchips. After progressing into a junior office role, I moved into a sales position. After 4 years of broken promises, I decided to 'bite the bullet' and hand in my notice, as I knew there was more to life than processing orders all day.
I considered IT recruitment, as some of my friends said there was potential to earn a lot of money. I've now been at GCS for three years and have had to work my way up the company ladder. I started as a Resourcer for one of the Senior Consultants and after 6 months became a Sales Consultant myself.
Quickly picking up the tools of the trade, I successfully managed 20 contractors in my first year. I have hit the highest level car target, booked just under £700K for the company and am now earning more money than I know what to do with. I currently manage a team of four and enjoy training the new consultants. I get a special boost when they deliver their first deals.
GCS has definitely had a massive impact on me. In retrospect, I'm glad that I took a long hard look at my life and took the decision to move away from a dead-end job.
